Johnson & Hayes Physical Therapists was founded by Scott Johnson and Todd Hayes in January 2003 with the opening of their Huntsville, AL office. As childhood friends, Scott and Todd played high school and college baseball together. Their shared sports history and their personal sports injuries sparked an interest in physical therapy. Scott and Todd are both graduates from the University of Alabama-Birmingham with Master’s degrees in Physical Therapy.
At Johnson & Hayes Physical Therapists, we offer a variety of services to fit your physical therapy needs. At our Huntsville, AL, Madison, AL, Hampton Cove, AL, Guntersville, AL, and Oneonta, AL locations, we focus on individualized treatment utilizing manual techniques, patient education, therapeutic exercise and state of the art modalities. What We Treat
Achilles Tendinitis
The Achilles tendon is the big tendon that connects the calf muscles to the foot. This is a very strong tendon that can become painful with running and jumping. This can be a very sharp or burning pain and make it difficult to finish your run when painful.
Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is not just regular pain that sticks around for a long time. Chronic pain will change how the body’s tissue, brain, and spinal cord work experiences the world . These complex interactions require a carefully prescribed exercise program with appropriate manual therapy to reduce your chronic pain experience.
Hip Pain
Hip pain typically appears in the front of the hip and groin region but can be found in the back of the hip as well, as with bursitis. Injuries to the labrum can produce clicking and popping and are usually found with impingement of the joint. Manual therapy is very helpful in reducing pain and improving range of motion no matter the diagnosis. Avoiding hip flexion or squat positions are usually recommended as well.
Iliotibial Band Syndrome
Pain on the outside part of the knee which may have a clicking sound. This is common in runners and cyclists. This is a common condition when increasing distance or speed suddenly during training. Manual therapy and exercises work very well on addressing this pain.
Knee: ACL Surgery
The ACL is a ligament in the knee that helps to stabilize the knee during athletic movements. It is a commonly injured ligament with around 100,000 ACL reconstruction surgeries performed in the US each year to replace the torn ligament. This is a common injury for young athletes, especially adolescent girls. Getting back to your sport requires close communication with the surgeon and a helping hand to get you through. We will get you back to your goals stronger than ever.
Knee: Meniscus Surgery
The meniscus acts like shock absorber in the knee but can become an issue when it is torn. Some surgeries will try to repair the meniscus while others will just trim out the torn pieces. Getting early range of motion and strength in physical therapy will help speed up your recovery.
Low Back Pain
Low back pain is the leading cause of work absences and activity limitations. 60-70% of individuals will seek help for low back pain in their lifetime with 15-45% of adults experiencing low back pain in a year, throughout the world. Low back pain can be from a variety of sources and requires a thorough evaluation to determine where the pain is coming from and what course of action will help you feel better. Our clinicians are highly trained to identify movement faults and address these problems head on.
Neck Pain
Experiencing pain around the neck and head can affect your mood, concentration, ability to work and can even produce headaches. There can be many things that cause pain: disc, stenosis, muscle, joint stiffness, or nerve tension. We will assess the entire area to determine what is causing your pain and the best way to address it.
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome
Front of the knee pain is common among runners and other weekend warriors. It is worse with more activity and with stairs. Finding the limitation in other regions of the body such as the ankle or hip is a great way to address this type of pain
Plantar Fasciitis
Pain on the bottom of the foot hurts with each step, especially the first steps of the morning. The plantar fascia is a thick band of tissue that helps to keep the foot strong but can become painful, especially in runners.
Return-To-Sport
Whether after surgery, an injury, or just wanting to get better in preparation for the season, we can help. Our therapists will work with you to determine your goals and what your sport requires to make sure you can hit the ground running. We will communicate with coaches, trainers and physicians to ensure everyone is on the same page in your return-to-sport.
Rotator Cuff Tears
Tears of the rotator cuff are a common, and very painful condition. Regaining range of motion and strength following any kind of rotator cuff tear takes expert guidance to make sure it happens quickly and painlessly. Rotator cuff injuries don’t always need surgery and rehab can be very effective in getting you back to your normal activities.
Sciatica
Sciatica or pain traveling down the leg along the path of the sciatic nerve can be caused by a couple of different regions. These symptoms are most generally associated with lower back pain: disc issues or stenosis (narrowing of the spaces between vertebrae), sciatic nerve tension, piriformis syndrome, or gluteal referral pain. Treating one area may not relieve all the symptoms and this is why a thorough evaluation is required to assess where the pain is coming from.
Shoulder Injuries
If your old baseball injury is flaring up we know what to do. Shoulder injuries can be very painful with several different things in the shoulder that can cause pain: labrum, biceps tendon, bursa, muscle tightness, or even instability. If you are coming in before surgery, after surgery or trying to avoid surgery we can help increase your range of motion and strength.
How We Treat
Balance Training
We hear all the time, “My balance isn’t the best”. It doesn’t have to be a weakness for you. We have ways to challenge your balance system to make you more stable and confident in your walking and daily activities to make it a strength.
Dry Needling
A technique that utilizes a thin solid needle to relax and reset muscles. Muscles can be very painful and the source of a lot of dysfunction in the body. Dry needling has been shown to dramatically reduce pain levels, increase strength, improve range of motion, and reduce chronic pain symptoms. This is a very valuable tool we use every day.
Electrical Stimulation
A modality that uses different electrical currents to stimulate the nervous system to reduce pain, reduce swelling, activate muscles, and improve circulation. We often combine this treatment with hot or cold packs to help you feel better.
Exercise
Our clinicians are experts in exercise progression and strengthening. Our physical therapists will properly identify appropriate exercises for your condition to help you achieve your goals. We use exercise to: improve range of motion, increase strength and power, increase endurance, and prevent further injury.
Functional Capacity Evaluations
The Ergo Science Physical Work Performance Evaluation allows our clinicians to assess your ability to return to work. You will be put through various lifting, pushing, and pulling activities to simulate your work duties.
Iontophoresis
A modality to reduce inflammation in the tissue. This device uses an electrical current to push anti-inflammatory medication into the tissue.
Manual Therapy
We use a ‘hands-on’ approach to help our patients feel better. We use our hands with every patient to identify areas of restriction in joints, muscles, tendons, or nerves. Patients who receive manual therapy-based treatments feel better FASTER. We use a variety of techniques including: joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, myofascial release, instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM), cupping, and stretching.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Chronic conditions and over use conditions are related to improper movement patterns. When we hurt, we move differently and vice-versa. We are able to identify these improper movement patterns and retrain the movement to reduce pain and improve performance. We will focus on muscle activation, timing, and patterning to maximize the way your body moves.
Taping and Bracing
Everyone comes to physical therapy with particular goals in mind and we will work toward those goals with you. We take what you want to do and break it down so we can work you back up to that goal. We use carefully prescribed exercises and activities to help you reach those goals. If you want to play with grandkids on the floor we will work on getting up and down. If you want to play golf we will work on rotating through impact. If you want to play soccer we will work on change of direction; you name it we will help you get there.

Traction
Neck and low back traction are tools we use to create space between the vertebrae in your spine to alleviate pain, reduce nerve symptoms, address disc issues, and improve mobility.
Ultrasound
A modality that uses soundwaves to increase circulation and warmth of the body’s tissues: muscle, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. This is a valuable tool we use to help the body heal and warm up tissue before manual treatments and movement therapies.
Tendonitis
Inflammation and pain in a tendon. The pain in the tendon is due to overuse of the muscle and tendon and can be very painful. Usually there is a culprit further away from the painful tendon that requires a careful eye to detect and address.
Total Joint Replacement
If you get new hip, knee, or shoulder we can help you get back to your normal activities. Getting stronger and gaining mobility is crucial especially early in the recovery. You need a therapist that will know how hard and how far to push you to make sure you get the most out of your new joint.
